About Rainbow Giving Australia

We are changing the landscape of LGBTQIA+ philanthropy in Australia

Rainbow Giving Australia Limited is an ambitious national LGBTQIA+ community foundation that supports community-led solutions by mobilising funding, growing skills, and expanding the knowledge base about the funding needs across the LGBTQIA+ sector.

Rainbow Giving Australia was created in November 2024 from the merger of The Aurora Group and GiveOUT. Over the past 25 years, Aurora and GiveOUT have paved the way for a better funded sector, investing in the organisations solving the most pressing problems for our communities. Rainbow Giving Australia is proud to continue this legacy.

In 2020, prior to collaborating, Aurora and GiveOUT collectively raised and distributed $226,690 for rainbow communities. This year, after just four years of working together, and now as RGA, we will distribute $1 million.

Why we exist

At least 11% of Australians identify as LGBTQIA+, but due to ongoing stigma and discrimination, our communities are far from equal. Despite significant progress, LGBTQIA+ communities continue to experience disproportionate rates of mental ill health, isolation, homelessness, and economic marginalisation.

We know that LGBTQIA+ community organisations are best placed to tackle these ongoing challenges, however the LGBTQIA+ sector is chronically underfunded, receiving just five cents in every $100 philanthropic dollars (Rainbow Resources Report).

Despite the high demand for services and proven effectiveness of LGBTQIA+-led organisations, only 0.2% of all registered charities list LGBTQIA+ people as the main beneficiary group that they serve.

LGBTQIA+ organisations are at the frontline, working tirelessly to increase access to services, promote equal rights, and provide much-needed relief and resources. But almost half of the LGBTQIA+ organisations in Australia operate on less than $10,000 a year (Rainbow Resources Report).

Rainbow Giving Australia exists to change this picture.

There is no substitute for lived experience. Queer people are always going to be best placed to serve the queer community.
